On Thursday October 15th, South Dublin County Council held an event similar to the infamous Dragon’s Den – The South Dublin Dragons! The event, organised by both South Dublin County Council and Comhairle na nÓg, took place in the South Dublin County Council Chamber from ten thirty to twelve thirty.

The Dragons were Mayor Mick Duff, SDCC County Manager Joe Horan, Nicola Mountford of the Synergy Centre in ITT Dublin and Máiread NicGabhann, a past member of Comhairle na nÓg.

The event was organised as part of the Creativity and Innovation Week in the Council (14th – 20th October 2009) and allowed young people living in the South Dublin area, through their schools or youth organisations, the chance to pitch their ideas to the Dragons. The catch? The ideas must be new, realistic, financially viable, creative and most of all, innovative. They had to come up with possible ways to improve and better the lives of young people living in South Dublin County.

Beginning at ten thirty and presented by eight different teams, the event turned out a huge success. The den itself, the SDCC Chamber, was filled with parents, teachers and fellow students, all there to support those presenting their creative, innovative ideas. Despite the fact that the teams would be pitching their ideas one by one in front of their audience, the atmosphere was calm and relaxed, the Chamber filled with the sounds of happy chit-chat and discussions of their projects. Over 60 young people were in attendance with 20 taking part in the event.

Each innovative idea was communicated clearly by the teams of entrepreneurs – each presentation was well thought out. Every one of the groups had brought in projects that were very informed and applicable to the current youth population of South Dublin, including proposals for a new skate park in Tallaght to a youth disco and social facility in Whitechurch.

The winning group, from Jobstown Community School, proposed to build a skate park for Tallaght, their project was highly researched (they knew where they wanted it, about local CCTV, etc) with drawn up plans and Computer Generated Image of what the park would look like. In second place St. Marks, Tallaght for their idea to develop an allotment in their school grounds and in third place Greenhill’s College for their mentoring programme. All winning participants received vouchers. The winning school will also receive a camera as their main prize.

The South Dublin Dragons offers young citizens a chance to be innovative, creative and release their inner budding entrepreneur and hopefully make their projects come to life.
