National Children’s Strategy
Adopted in November 2000, the National Children’s Strategy was established to progress the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in Ireland. The strategy seeks to provide a clear direction to all those concerned with advancing the status and quality of life of children and sets out a series of objectives to guide children’s policy over the next ten years. The three main tenets of the Strategy include listening, thinking, and acting more effectively for children.
National Children's Strategy
The first goal of the National Children’s Strategy states:
“Children will have a voice in measures that affect them and their views will be given due weight in accordance with their age and maturity”
One of the measures by which this consultative process is being achieved is through the development of a national Dáil na nÓg and local Comhairle na nÓg at County level. County Development Boards/Community Services Departments were identified as key agencies to deliver the National Children’s Strategy at local level through the establishment of the Comhairle na nÓg structure.
Dáil na nÓg
Objectives of Dáil na nÓg:
1. To provide a place where children and young representatives can raise and debate issues of concern to them;
2. To act as a way for children and young people’s concerns to be fed into the development of public policy-making;
3. To provide a model for children and young people’s participation which can be developed at local level with links to the national Dáil;
4. To support civic, social and personal development in children and young people;
5. To provide an opportunity for children and young people to hear and learn about the experiences of other children growing up in Ireland.
